The Centennial celebration of the Hell Gate Bridge is officially underway, with several events taking place now until the fall. On September 9, in conjunction with the 9/11 memorial ceremonies, a day of service will be held in Astoria Park. Additional events to mark the 100th anniversary of bridge engineer Gustav Lindenthal’s masterpiece include a 5K Run, featuring the ACA Bike Race, the Hell Gate Road Runners and the Federation of Italian American Organizations of Queens; and later in the year a classic car show, fireworks celebration and concert.

The festivities have already begun with the cutting of a birthday cake at the Greater Astoria Historical Society and a historical slide show presentation by Queens historian Jason D. Antos to a sold-out crowd at Q.E.D Astoria earlier in March.
